So! We decided to a light day today, and cram more into the next day. Because it’s $20 or $30/day to go into Angkor Wat (I don’t remember which). In hindsight, that isn’t that much, but we thought these particular temples weren’t part of that, so we’d do those first and just pay once for the others. Plus being so tired, we wanted to not push it too much.
So, leisurely breakfast at the hotel:
Then met our driver outside and off to Banteay Srei!
We left at 8 or 9, I don’t remember, and the drive took probably 45 min.
It was a lovely drive though.
Lots of greenery, a few small towns….
Then suddenly temple.
Map of the temple.
And we’re there!
Look at all that crazy detail, and this temple was built somewhere between 944-1000 (oh wiki says 967).
I just took this pic ‘cause it interested me, but I think actually it might be the abduction of Sita.
This was a nice little raised platform in the shade, lovely view.
You could pretty much see all of the inner area.
I haven’t the faintest how to read this, actually I’m not even sure what language it is, if it’s Khmer or something else. But it is very pretty.
I get really confused what’s a demon, what’s a lion, and what’s a dragon.
Elephants I can recognize though.
Not totally sure if they were very short at the time of construction, it’s just meant to be small, or if this is not even a doorway at all.
It just amazes me that all those fine details on the dragon’s (demon’s?) face are still intact.
Or how about the detail on that? Just how many arms does that dude have?
Feeling super brain dead right now, so have run out of commentary.
Other than ooooh pretty.
And I have no idea what’s going on here.
There are more pics if you click through to the flickr gallery, but I didn’t want to be overwhelming, especially since there will be mooooore.
And parting shot:
